das artist in residence programm

english version: see below!

our artist in residence program

artist in residence at villa magdalena k.

Villa Magdalena is a queer-feminist d.i.y. artist house and project space in St. Pauli, Hamburg. Our house has a 110 sqm print workshop on the ground floor with facilities for screen printing and letterpress and a 30 sqm space that can be used for events and exhibitions.

Since the mid-90s, our AIR program has offered artists the opportunity to live in our house for between one and three months and realize their own projects. The AIR program was initially funded by the Hamburg Department of Culture. Currently, those living in the house finance the AIR room through their rent. We provide a partially furnished room and the offer to use the print workshop and graphic room, as well as to exchange ideas with other artists. At the end of the residency, artists can present their work to an interested audience at openings and artist talks.

We are very pleased that our residency program has been well received internationally in recent years, and that we have established lasting contacts with artists from Canada, USA, Poland and UK.

As an artist in residence you can stay in Villa Magdalena for up to three months (from June to September) and work on your own projects. You live rent-free in a partly furnished 20 sqm room and only pay fee for the print workshop, which is 60 Euro per month. In return we ask you to organise a public presentation of your project at Villa Magdalena K. at the end of your stay. This presentation can be an exhibition, a talk, a film screening, a performance – depending on what you are working on.

The application for the artist in residence program is simple and informal – just write us a letter presenting your project idea and tell us a little bit about yourself and your work. If you can send some documentation of your previous work that is very helpful. Please indicate when you would like to stay in Villa Magdalena K. We are very open to any kind of work and if the time slot is not yet taken you will be welcomed to the house.

We look forward to hearing from you!
